Why to discuss sexuality

Women and their partners have many questions regarding sexuality which may go unasked due to embarrassment they may feel, especially if their midwife is uncomfortable discussing the topic herself (Polomeno, 2000).

Midwife is a health professional women see regularly during their pregnancy hence her open attitude to discussing sexuality during pregnancy may be essential.

National Institute for Clinical Excellence guidelines (2003) states that midwife should inform women that coitus is not known to be associated with any adverse outcomes.

Should midwives therefore discuss this topic alongside with other lifestyle topics such as diet, smoking or exercise? Or even more so, since myths, fear, confusion and anxieties; such as miscarriage, premature labour, damage to the baby, are common misconceptions with regards to sexuality during pregnancy (Polomeno, 2000)?

Pregnancy is a time of transition to parenthood and a new family unit. Couples' intimacy during pregnancy is important as it helps partners to create a strong bond and affirm their love for each other. This is an integral part in their transition from two to three as they are adjusting to their new roles and entering a new phase of their lives together (Aston, 2001).
